Application of high-speed steel rolls in hot-rolled stainless steel production

High-speed steel roll is a high-carbon high-speed steel material, which has the characteristics of high hardness, high wear resistance, high thermal stability, good hardenability, and toughness, and is currently one of the fastest-growing and most widely used hot roll materials. one. High-speed steel rolls play an important role in the production of hot-rolled stainless steel, which can improve rolling efficiency, reduce rolling costs, improve rolling quality, and extend roll life.

Hot-rolled stainless steel is a metal material with excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, wear resistance, and aesthetics, and is widely used in construction, the chemical industry, food, medicine, aviation, and other fields. In the production process of hot-rolled stainless steel, it needs to go through many processes, including rough rolling, intermediate annealing, finishing rolling, and surface treatment. In these processes, the role is an important part that is directly in contact with the stainless steel strip, and its performance and quality directly affect the forming and surface quality of the stainless steel strip.

In traditional hot-rolled stainless steel production, commonly used roll materials include cast iron, cast steel, and carbide composite rolls. Although these roll materials have certain advantages, they also have some disadvantages, such as poor wear resistance of cast iron and cast steel rolls, prone to peeling and cracks; high cost of carbide composite rolls, prone to falling off and fracture. These disadvantages lead to frequent roll replacement, increased rolling downtime and maintenance costs, and reduced production efficiency and economic benefits.

In order to solve these problems, high-speed steel rolls have been widely used in the production of hot-rolled stainless steel in recent years. High-speed steel rolls have the following advantages:

(1) The hardness of high-speed steel rolls is high, which can reach 60~65HRC, which is much higher than that of traditional cast iron and cast steel rolls. This makes the high-speed steel roll have extremely high wear resistance, can effectively resist the cutting and friction of the stainless steel strip, and reduces the wear and deformation of the roll.

(2) High-speed steel rolls have good thermal stability and can maintain good strength and toughness at high temperatures. This enables high-speed steel rolls to adapt to the high-temperature deformation conditions of stainless steel strips, avoiding cracks and fractures caused by temperature changes.

(3) The high-speed steel roll has good hardenability, which can ensure that the entire roll section reaches the required hardness uniformly. This makes the high-speed steel roll have a uniform mechanical effect

Some countries and enterprises have begun to replace traditional cast iron or cast steel rolls with high-speed steel rolls, and have achieved remarkable results in the production of hot-rolled stainless steel. For example, Japan’s Nippon Steel Corporation used high-speed steel rolls on the finishing mill of its Dalian Stainless Steel Plant, which increased the service life of the rolls from the original 3,000 tons to more than 8,000 tons, while reducing the consumption and replacement times of the rolls. China Tangshan Lianqiang Metallurgical Roll Co., Ltd., in cooperation with the General Iron and Steel Research Institute, took the lead in successfully developing centrifugal casting high-speed steel rolls in my country, and successfully applied them to hot-rolled narrow-strip mills, achieving economic benefits of saving more than 20 yuan per ton.

In addition to using a single high-speed steel material, some researchers have tried composite casting, combining high-speed steel with other materials to form composite rolls with different properties and functions. For example, China Steel Xingtai Machinery Roll Group Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a high-speed steel composite roll, which combines high-speed steel with low-carbon cast steel or ductile iron by centrifugal casting to form a roll with high hardness, wear resistance, and crack resistance. A durable outer layer and an inner layer with good toughness and support. This composite roll has been successfully applied in the continuous casting and rolling production lines of Handan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. and Baosteel’s hot continuous rolling production line.
